My sister, Sara made me an an octopus glove for my project (she is a costume designer extraordinaire). I miss her a lot, I just got the yellow slip in my PO box indicating that I have a package waiting, and I think (I hope!) it is her glove, which I can't wait to see in person.
"We learn patience and endurance in following through a piece of work. We learn to respect material in working it. Formed things and thoughts live a life of their own, they radiate a meaning. Making something become real and take its place in actuality adds to our feeling of usefulness and security. Learning to form makes us understand all forming... this is the fundamental knowing." -Anni Albers
This is an ongoing exploration of making and conceptions of form via the construction of tape hand casts and corresponding gloves. I recently discovered that I didn't know how to make a glove, which I had initially assumed would be a relatively straight forward undertaking. There is an obvious connection between hands and making, and I started to collect tape casts of friends hands so that I could design a personalized a glove as a part of an attempt to reclaim the ability to make. I have also started collecting gloves from friends in order to learn more about other peoples' approaches to making and conceptions of form. If you would like to participate in all of this (love for) glove talk, feel free to contact me with ideas or images!

Mom mittens!
Two pairs of mittens (inspired by this project) are coming in the mail to me from mia madre. Since she is in Massachusetts and I am in Hawaii, I cannot tape cast her hand, so below is another mitten cast (a la Katharine) of my hand, awaiting my mom's mittens.
This cast incorporates a letter my mom sent me almost a year ago (a time when I was stressing over being underemployed and strapped for cash, she sent this along with a money order to help me out), and this (so funny, very sweet) letter captures my mother's beautiful spirit, and directed personality and energy in a nutshell (word for word transcription below):
1/22/10
Dear Casey,
I hope this helps our in relieving your panicking feelings. I am very sad at the loss of Martha Coakley's potential senate seat for Massachusetts. Scott Brown is an idiot, and I can't tell you how many guys I have talked to - to make sure they understand my side and our side for women's reproductive health. It is time to stop our tax dollars from supporting Viagra in the Health Reform legislation.
Love,
Mom

This is a glove made by Nichol out of leftover fabric from a halloween costume prop. Nichol has a very distinct hand shape, her pinky is shorter than most (she is the next step in evolution), and so an outside wearer of this glove also appears to be one step ahead of the rest of us.
Katharine had seen me wriggle out of far too many far too tight packing tape body casts, so she opted for a mitten cast (much easier to slip the hand out of) and made me an oven mitt.

These are gloves inspired by a somewhat recent discovery of guerrilla knitting (!) and a resulting desire to re-learn how to knit (or, in this case, crochet) and someday contribute to this beautiful movement!
This is a glove for Katie (pictured below) a fellow aspiring crocheter. She is making me a glove for a tape cast of my hand in response to this one, which inspired the "conversation in gloves" title.

This (above) is a glove for Amanda (Katie's twin, pictured below), who just may persevere with the knitting over crochet.
And a glove for Kate, a sweet sweet talent who took initiative and patiently taught the crew to knit.
